From living on 188 euros a month to earning 180 million in a year: the life of Conor McGregor, the highest paid athlete in the world

Forbes magazine has published one of its well-known lists to know the income of public figures. In this case, it was the highest paid athletes, since the publication has analyzed the gains obtained in the period of time that goes from May 2020 to the first day of this month in 2021. And the result has been this: Roger Federer has given up his throne after his 12 months of inactivity in the figure of Conor McGregor.

This mixed martial arts fighter was born 31 years ago in Dublin. And although in his childhood he excelled playing soccer, at age 12 he started boxing. In 2007, at just 18 years old, McGregor made his debut in this discipline as an amateur. He was the starting point of a successful career that has led him to be one of the best in his field and to become the highest paid athlete in a calendar year, pocketing $ 180 million.

In Spain little has been written about the most personal side of him. Not everyone knows, for example, that he started boxing fed up with being bullied at Crumlin's school, where he studied when he was little. A key person in his life has been one of his sisters, Erin, who gave him the power of positive thinking. She is well known in her country for participating in bodybuilding contests and for following her brother's diet. He also has another sister named Aoife.

In Northern Ireland he also found the love of his life: 33-year-old Dee Devlin. They met almost 13 ago in a nightclub and their connection was so brutal that they did not hesitate to move in together very soon. They settled in the humble neighborhood of Walkinstown, 30 kilometers from Dublin, but their economic situation was very oppressive. They survived on the 188 euros that the Irish Government gave per month to unemployed people. However, soon Conor McGregor began to speak and by the hand of his wife, who encouraged him in each training and acted as an emotional coach, he would end up becoming one of the best fighters in the UFC.

Despite how close they have been all this time, McGregor and Devlin have not wanted to go down the aisle. Although they have formed a family with two children. The first of them, Conor Jack McGregor Jr., was born on May 5, 2017 while the second was born on January 4, 2019. His life is quite quiet when the boxer does not compete: walks with his children and go out for a drink.

Outside of his private lot, McGregor has been well known for his scandals outside the ring. 2019 was a year in which his name appeared in many tabloids on dubious merits. He took his fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov too seriously and engaged in criminal behavior. For example, he threw fences and garbage cans at the glass of the car where his rival was going, breaking the windows and injuring one of the passengers, which served to be in search and capture. He was arrested in New York on charges of public disorder.

Another bitter controversy targeted Nurmagomedov as well. He compared her wife with a towel on social networks, since she wore a veil as she belonged to the Muslim religion. He was accused of racism.

Very controversial was the episode of her with Terri Murray, a woman who accused McGregor of being the father of her two-year-old daughter Clodagh. According to her version, the wrestler had sex with her in 2017 in Liverpool, very shortly before Dee Devlin gave birth to her first child together. In this regard, he has been accused twice of sexual assault but released without charge.

Conor McGregor is a self-confessed whiskey drinker to the point that he has his own brand of whiskey. He has confessed to gorging himself on it in the days before the fights; he has beaten a man in a bar for refusing a drink and other problems related to his consumption.

In addition, he has had problems with the Kinahan clan, Ireland's most dangerous mafia, and has been fined several times for speeding.
